Effective course planning involves many different perspectives. To make the process easier, we’ve developed role-specific toolkits that provide tailored resources, guidance, and best practices.
-

Department Chairs – Tools to support strategic course planning, faculty workload distribution, and program-level scheduling decisions.
 -

Department Schedulers (Staff) – Step-by-step guides, checklists, and technical resources to manage logistics, data entry, and room assignments efficiently.
 -

Instructors – Information on submitting course preferences, understanding scheduling policies, and steps to take once you have been assigned to your courses, including submitting textbook and other course material information.

These toolkits are designed to give each role the resources they need to contribute effectively to the scheduling process and ensure a well-organized semester for students and faculty alike.

The effective assignment and utilization of instructional space and flow of student class schedules requires adherence to the standard class times indicated in the Academic Senate . Lecture classes should adhere to a standard time block whether being held online, in-person, or in a hybrid or hyflex modality. Classes seeking placement in general-use classrooms must adhere to a standard time block.
Failure to conform to the standard timeslots may result in not receiving a classroom or final exam timeslot assignment. Chairs are encouraged to connect with Academic Scheduling before scheduling a class off-template.

Per SP 23-013, University Hour is the designated block during which few, if any, classes will be held, enabling the campus community to schedule events, meetings, and other activities without conflicting with established class time blocks. University Hour only applies during the Fall and Spring semesters and is not held during Finals Week.
Current University Hour: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00PM - 1:30PM

Current Instruction/Learning Mode values at CI are as follows:
Online Asynchronous (APDB: 01) is defined as a class that is offered entirely online with no set day/time. Students are expected to complete class work asynchronously. This mode is eligible for inclusion in CSU Fully Online.
Online Synchronous (APDB: 02) is defined as a class that meets online for every class session for the entire semester at the established day/time published in the Schedule of Classes. This mode is eligible for inclusion in CSU Fully Online.
Online Hybrid (APDB: 10) (also called Bichronous Online) is defined as a class that meets online for some class meetings at the established day/time published in the Schedule of Classes and some class work is completed online asynchronously by the students. Must have at minimum two meeting patterns to reflect the synchronous and asynchronous formats. This mode is eligible for inclusion in CSU Fully Online.
In-Person (APDB: 09) is defined as a class that meets in-person at a predetermined location (either on-campus or off-campus) for every class session at the established day/time published in the Schedule of Classes for the entire semester.
Hybrid Online & In-Person (APDB: 05 for asynchronous or 06 for synchronous) is defined as a class that has any mix of online and in-person class meetings and/or class work. Must have at minimum two meeting patterns to reflect the in-person and online formats.

For Fall and Spring semesters, seated final exams scheduled during Finals Week should conform to the official Final Exam Schedule from the Academic Senate . This applies whether the final exam is held in-person or online.
For Summer semesters, seated final exams should be held during the final class meeting of the semester.
Classes not requiring a seated final exam do not need to have one assigned - contact your departmental support staff or the Academic Scheduling Office to resolve any incorrectly assigned final exams in CI Records.
